Guided Fly Fishing & Instruction
Highlights
The Katahdin Region offers some of the best fly fishing New England has to offer. Our local waters are home to two of the most exciting cold-water game fish species to land on a fly rod: the eastern brook trout and the landlocked salmon. The average size we land in our target waters is 8-14 inches for brook trout and 12-20 inches for landlocked salmon.
We offer trips for any experience level and can include beginner to intermediate instruction as part of your day on the water. Instruction topics can include rigging up your fly rod, casting, fly presentation, fly fishing techniques, fly selection, reading the water, Maine fishing laws, and more.
We provide fishing gear with your booking (fly rod/reel, line, leaders, tippet, flies, etc). Waders are available for rent. Depending on the time of year, waders may be optional or mandatory. Wet wading (no waders) is an intimate way to spend a day fishing in the water during summer months!
Weather is unpredictable. Our experienced guides will adapt your trip as needed to provide a comfortable, enjoyable, and safe experience. If the guide deems weather conditions unsafe, the trip will stop at the guide’s sole discretion. If the forecasted weather presents potentially hazardous conditions, you will be notified and given the option to reschedule, subject to availability. We do not offer refunds due to weather.
West Branch of the Penobscot River
This legendary river is well known for producing incredible landlocked salmon fishing. All of our trips on this river will focus on landlocked salmon, with us catching the occasional brook trout, fall fish, and other species. We typically see landlocked salmon in the 15-18 inch range, with the largest caught on this river so far measuring 22 inches. At this time we only offer wade trips. Conditions on this river require that you are comfortable wading in strong currents and can cast long distances. We recommend this trip for intermediate to advanced anglers. If the conditions are right this can sometimes be a good place for a beginner to hone their skills. Many spots we fish are a short distance from the road, however, a few more secluded locations require hiking up to two-thirds of a mile each way.
Nesowadnehunk (Sourdnahunk) Stream - Baxter State Park
This is our favorite stream in the region, making it the perfect location for any experience level. All of our trips on this stream focus equally on brook trout and landlocked salmon. We typically see brook trout in the 6-10 inch range, with an occasional 10-14 inch fish mixed in. A few holes hold some rather large fish for a stream of this size; our largest brook trout so far is 16 inches and our largest landlocked salmon is 20 inches. Because of this stream’s unique location in Baxter State Park, you can expect picturesque surroundings, seclusion, and the possibility of seeing a moose or bear. This is considered a “hike and fish” day trip. We fish without waders when conditions are appropriate for wet wading. This trip requires hiking 3-6 miles throughout the day, to hit our favorite spots.
Remote Ponds & Streams - Baxter State Park
While some ponds and streams are accessible as a day trip, nothing compares to a multi-day hike into the backcountry to fish for brook trout in the remote ponds and streams of Baxter State Park. Trips can last up to five days, covering up to 25 miles of trail to reach multiple remote locations. These trips suit any experience level and can include hiking, backpacking, camping, wet wading, and canoeing to reach target fish. We can customize this trip to your specific desires and needs.
Instruction & Lead Guide
Our lead guide, Koty, has been fly fishing since 2014 and has lived in the Katahdin Region for seven years. While he enjoys fishing in locations across the state, his favorite is Nesowadnehunk Stream. The warm summer months bring comfortable temperatures for wet wading in the stream and immersing oneself in the Maine Wilderness. This also presents the opportunity to practice newfound skills on an easily wadable stream. While basic instruction is easily included into any trip, a full day trip is best. The first half of the day can be focused on the skills you wish to learn and the second half of the day can be focused on putting those skills to use landing fish.
